Q: Why did the smoke monster cross the island?
A: To get to the Others’ side.

8 facts about the smoke monster:
- One of the sound effects used when the monster appears is the sound of a New York City taxicab receipt printer (which is why Rose, who is from the Bronx, remarked that it sounded so familiar).
- On the blast door map, there is information about a “Cerberus system” and the initials “CV” which stands for “Cerberus Vent” and is a reference to the monster. In Greek and Roman mythology, Cerberus is a multi-headed hound that guards the gates of Hades.
- Only a few people ever made it past Cerberus in mythological tales, including Orpheus who charmed him with music, Hercules who wrestled him to submission, Psyche who bribed him and Sibyl who drugged him.
- A 5-year-old Locke drew a picture of a man being attacked by a whirling cloud of black smoke.
- When the monster killed Eko, he did so in the sign of the cross—first picking Eko’s body straight up then throwing it sideways against a tree, sideways against another tree and slamming it to the ground.
- Producers have confirmed that Eko’s brother Yemi, the Medusa spider that bit and paralyzed Nikki and some versions of Walt were actually manifestations of the smoke monster.
- The howl that the monster makes is usually in concert pitch A. The frequency of this pitch is 440 hertz. A-440 is the standard to which musical instruments are tuned.
- The Holy Quran says, “Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke plainly visible, enveloping the people this will be a penalty grievous.” verses 10-11 of the 44th Surah of AlDukhan (The Smoke)
